OUR STORY

The Burlap People works with skilled artisans, self-help groups and NGOs from Bengal to create eco-friendly lifestyle products made from jute, cotton, and other plant-based textiles. Our process is slow, intentional, and fully handmade.

We collaborate with one of India’s oldest screen-printing units, preserving traditional printing methods while adapting them to modern design. Each piece carries the mark of a human hand, a local craft story, and the textures of Bengal.

Our workshop sits on a small farm on the outskirts of Calcutta, where work and nature coexist in a way that shapes our philosophy. At the heart of our HQ is a doba - a serene natural pond that has become our little haven.

It is home to a motley crew of fish, the elegant Indian cormorant, shy ducks, kingfishers on seasonal visits, snakes that prefer to stay unseen, migratory birds, our resident “dinosaur”- the Bengal water monitor - and, of course, our Chief Mischief Officer, Dora.

Here, surrounded by craft and wilderness, we build products that are deliberate, durable, and deeply rooted in the land we call home.

THIS ISN’T A BRAND, IT’S CONSCIOUS LIVING
